Man s stories provide a living history of Milford
"They were known as the Christian Union Church then, and when the city built a new Fort Trumbull School in 1922 they bought the old one, a two-room building, to hold services in.'' Porter, who was born in 1928, began attending that church and when that group voted to affiliate with the Presbyterian denomination, he became a charter member of what was then known as the Fort Trumbull Presbyterian Church. The congregation built a new church on Seaside Avenue, dedicating it in 1948. When Porter turned 80 recently, church members threw him a birthday party in their social hall. The Rev. Ann Marie Meyerhoffer said at a later pot luck luncheon -- at which Porter provided his famous sugar-free trifle -- that Porter "is a remarkable person, full of faith.'' The trifle, an English dessert consisting of custard and fresh berries, was not an old family recipe, its maker said.
Kiffin needles Spurrier
Cregg, Oakland's primary offensive line coach since Tom Cable was promoted to interim head coach, left the Raiders with two games left in the regular season, and Cable lashed out through the media. “I don't really care," Lane Kiffin said. “I'm not concerned about that. I've got a job to do in our athletic department, and that's to put together the best staff we can put together and the best players we can put together." Lane Kiffin said his dad's hiring is “basically official" and that he expects him in Knoxville two days after Tampa Bay's season concludes. “That hire was extremely important for a number of reasons," Lane Kiffin said. “As we evaluated different people, we felt this was the best defensive coordinator in all of football — college or the NFL.
Basra enjoys peace as British troops prepare to leave
"My company is working on many projects such as the building of more than 10 schools and other public works." There is even a property boom. "After the prices of the houses in Basra collapsed because of the bad situation in the city we couldn't give houses away," said estate agent Kareem Shual. "People left their houses and ran away from death. Only the lucky were able to sell at very cheap prices. Now prices have recovered." .
The friendly Sunset Gecko at Gili Meno
After two years of lobbying city administrations to use the technology without giving money under table, he decided to quit and start making change on a smaller scale. He grew up in the arid desert of Quwait, while his father worked for a Japanese oil company, Tanaka says that he always dreamed of having a place to share with people. Three years ago, with friends from different parts of the world, he opened Sunset Gecko, which adheres to eco-friendly practices. More than often, tourists looking for unspoiled nature to escape the city's pollution end up damaging the environment of their holiday destination. Beautiful spots in Bali have become testament of this, with overdevelopment resulting in beach erosion. Stilted open art wooden huts are the perfect spots to enjoy the beach.
Jim Bailey: Lessons from economic collapse
Used to be a rule of thumb said a family should never expect to pay more than a year's salary, or 25 percent of their monthly income, whichever applied, for a home mortgage. And a sizable down payment was the norm. With more and more families contributing full-time incomes, those rules were trashed. Expectations of homes costing six figures increased. Everyone deserved a newly built home in a lavish subdivision, even if it meant a long commute to work. And that often was in a formidable SUV, the better to intimidate other drivers and protect you in case of an accident. But nobody dreamed gasoline prices would skyrocket to $4 a gallon. Or that those no-money-down, low-interest mortgages with eventual balloon payments would lead to a soaring foreclosure rate, resulting in rapid deflation of property values.
Strut Your Monky Stuff
The architect of this success is Father Karl Wallner, dean of the monastery's theological school and a monk here for almost 30 years. Father Karl puts his slim mobile on the table at which we sit - his ringtone is a track from the album - and calls my battered old non-digital tape recorder "prehistoric". To be called prehistoric by a monk certainly gives pause for thought. Father Karl, who runs the monastery's website, is in effect its head of communications, trying to interact with the world beyond the cloisters without being overwhelmed by it. When a friend emailed last February to tell him Universal were seeking a choir and had organized a kind of monastic X Factor, he decided to enter, sending in a YouTube clip of the monks strutting their 12th-century stuff. His rivals didn't have a prayer.
The distant gleam of greatness
In the arts, he set up the National School of Drama, the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the Sahitya Akademi, the Film and Television Institute. He commissioned Charles and Ray Eames to produce a report that led to the National Institute of Design. All five IITs set up before 1994 were set up under Nehru; none under Indira or Rajiv. Manmohan Singh, who is Nehruvian in his orientation, has added six more. Institutions came up in the Nehru era that have not come up since in the public sector. They remain unmatched by any other poor nation; and not a few rich ones. We like leaders from the past so that we can deify them. Their angularities do not show from the distance. Up close we are put off by their weaknesses. Manmohan Singh, the leader who has most improved our lives, we think of as weak, because he depends on Sonia Gandhi, and ineffective, because he does not mirror our rage against Pakistan.
Financing retrofits for all
It subsidizes them for low-income families. Because it's not a bank, it can waive some normal restrictions: For example, if a homeowner's first mortgage is for 80 percent of the home's value, and her second mortgage is worth another 10 percent of the house's value, the septic loan program can still finance a septic replacement. In fact, homeowners can sometimes take septic loans that bring their total debt up to 120 percent of their home's appraised value. The version for the lowest income households carries an interest rate of just 2 percent. What's more, this interest accrues indefinitely. It only has to be paid when the house is refinanced or sold. For families less strapped for cash, there is a 4 percent interest rate, with 2 percent of the interest deferred until sale or refinance; a straight 4 percent rate; and a straight 6 percent rate.
Young girl swims 'Channel' for charity
The ambitious Abbots Langley Primary School pupil joined thousands in the epic Aspire Channel Swim challenge, in which she completed a staggering 1,416 lengths at her local Bushey Grove pool. Holly said: "My dad was telling me a story one day about my uncle who wanted to swim the Channel. I decided I wanted to do the same. I love swimming so mum looked on the internet to see if there was anything I could do which was similiar. “I'm so happy that I've completed the challenge. I was a bit nervous and it was hard work but I knew I could see it through to the end. It was an enjoyable way for me to raise money for charity." Holly, who was inspired by Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington, swam around 100 lengths three to four times a week to reach the target.
